New results on diabetes-associated pregnancy complications

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that can be associated with concomitant and secondary diseases as well as increased mortality. In addition, diabetes is a risk factor for complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

In this context, a distinction is made between type 1 or type 2 diabetes that already existed before pregnancy (pregestational diabetes) or diabetes that occurs for the first time during pregnancy, called gestational diabetes. Since 2012, a two-stage screening for gestational diabetes has been available for pregnant women without known diabetes. In the Diabetes Surveillance of the Robert Koch Institute, selected pregnancy complications have now been illustrated for the first time. The results have been published on the website and in the German Medical Journal. For the indicators “prevalence and screening gestational diabetes”, the trends have been updated on the website. Further information on this topic can be found here.

Quality of care for type 2 diabetes
The quality of care for people with type 2 diabetes plays a crucial role in the prevention, treatment, and prognosis of diabetes-associated concomitant and secondary diseases. For some care indicators, current data from the GEDA 2021/2022-Diabetes study were analyzed and the results recently published in the journal Die Diabetologie. Further information on this topic can be found here.

Context factors
In the prevention of type 2 diabetes, relationship-based factors, also called context factors, play an important role. This refers to people's living, working, and environmental conditions, but also to health policies that can influence the risk of type 2 diabetes. For the context factors mentioned below, the trend on the website have been updated. Further information on this topic can be found here.

Further updates
In addition, for other indicators, the existing trends for 2021 were continued and, in some cases, results stratified by regional socioeconomic deprivation were added.
