Current Results of the Diabetes Surveillance in the Context of Care and the COVID-19 Pandemic

The range of topics is wide and covers the various fields of action in diabetes surveillance. The first article provides current data on the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and examines the implementation and screening participation for GDM over time. The second article describes the prevalence of diabetes in 2019 based on ambulatory claims data and looks at the prevalence of major comorbidities, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and depression, in persons with diabetes compared with persons without diabetes. Since for chronic diseases the quality of care is of great importance from the point of view of those affected, another article is devoted to the self-assessed quality of care of persons with diabetes. In view of the fact that diabetes can be associated with health-related functional impairments, the following article looks at the expected healthy lifespan of persons affected by diabetes. Finally, the last article in this issue investigates how the outpatient utilization patterns of people with diabetes have evolved in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic containment efforts.
