The continuation of national diabetes surveillance at the Robert Koch Institute
The second phase of the project to develop national diabetes surveillance in Germany began at the Robert Koch Institute at the beginning of the new year 2020.
The Robert Koch Institute has been working on diabetes surveillance in Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health since 2015. During the initial project phase, a scientific framework concept was drawn up consisting of four fields of action and 40 core indicators. The next step involved identifying appropriate data sources with which to populate the indicators, and developing the first reporting formats.
The 2019 Diabetes in Germany report presented the initial diabetes surveillance results. Since spring 2020, this website has displayed the results from all indicators in interactive charts.
In order to build on this foundation, the Federal Ministry of Health is funding a second project phase that will run until the end of 2021. Continuation of the project is intended to ensure that the necessary building blocks for the consolidation of diabetes surveillance as part of the surveillance of noncommunicable diseases (NCD surveillance) have been put in place by 2022.
